UFC 117 Predictions

Fight Poster for UFC 117 Silva vs Sonnen

Get ready for UFC 117 this Saturday

Hey everybody, Mike the comic guy here. I know UFC isn’t normally my bag, at least not around here, but since there’s a card coming up this weekend with some fairly significant fights on it I thought I’d weigh in with my predictions. Don’t worry though I’m not giving up my day job; I’ll have my thoughts on the upcoming comic releases right away. So without any further adieu lets take a look at UFC 117.

Main Event: Anderson Silva vs. Chael Sonnen

To be honest with you I can’t believe that Chael Sonnen is even in this fight to begin with. I think that if you look at all of Anderson Silva’s matches in the UFC the only guy who ever looked like he might beat him was Dan Henderson in the first round of their tilt back in 2008. However I thought that there were flashes of vulnerability in Silva’s game when he fought Nate Marquardt too. So I was looking forward to seeing a rematch between them. Of course Chael Sonnen spoiled the party back in February when he had the audacity to beat Nate the Great in pretty convincing fashion, more convincing in fact than when Silva downed Marquardt. So am I picking Sonnen for the upset here? No chance, I’d love to see it happen, but there’s no way. He might be a bit of a jerk, but Anderson Silva is the best MMA fighter in the world right now and while Chael Sonnen is a very tough guy, so were Forrest Griffin, Travis Lutter , Rich Franklin, and Chris Leben, and Silva embarrassed all of them. He’s just got too much talent to lose to Chael Sonnen. I say Silva KO’s him in the  second round. Don’t feel bad if you’re a Sonnen fan though, Silva’s got too much talent to lose to anybody on the planet, Georges St. Pierre included.

Jon Fitch vs Thiago Alves

This fight is a rematch. Fitch scored a TKO at the end of the second round when these two met back in 2006. Since then Fitch has traveled the conservative road, he picked his fights carefully and managed to secure himself a title shot with George St. Pierre, and although it was St. Pierre who had his had raised after the fifth round; there’s something to be said for a guy who can go 5 with GSP. Alves on the other hand took some crazy fights; on my score card he fought and won 4 fights I didn’t think he had a chance in. But he won them all and earned his shot at St. Pierre. The result was the same though, Alves went the distance, but the night belonged to the champ.  So when these two square off on Saturday I see the rematch going to Alves this time. There’s no question that Fitch is a world class wrestler, but Josh Koscheck and Matt Hughes were pretty good wrestlers too, and Alves disposed of both of them. I think the loss to Fitch last time was a turning point in The Pitbull’s career and think you’ll see Thiago Alves win by TKO in the second round.

Clay Guida vs Raphael Dos Anjos

I will never pick anybody to beat Clay Guida. Guida is the epitome of MMA is about, he works hard, is always in great shape, puts on an exciting fight every time he gets in the ring, and is a true sportsman as well. If you’re not sure what MMA announcers mean when they say that a fighter “leaves everything in the cage” just watch a Clay Guida fight and you’ll understand. Unfortunately he’s only 8-7 in his last 15 fights so I’m wrong a little less than half the time when he fights though. However this time I’m not picking solely based the mancrush I have on Guida. I really think he’s a better fighter. I say Guida wins a unanimous decision.

Matt Hughes vs Ricardo Almeida

It will be interesting to see how this plays out. First of all Matt Hughes has always done well against Gracie fighters, and second of all Matt Hughes isn’t as washed up as people want to believe. He lost two fights to Georges St. Pierre, had a bad night against Thiago Alves, and made beating Matt Serra look harder than it should have been. That hardly makes him washed up. Hughes took 5 fights in two years back on 2006 and 2007 and they caught up with him, he’s had to years of just taking a fight every 12 months and on Saturday you’ll see him TKO Brazilian Jui Jitsu Black Belt Ricardo Ameida.

Roy Nelson vs Junior Dos Santos

Would somebody please shut Roy Nelson up? How does the fattest man in pro sports have  a 16 -4 record? Please Junior, KO this trash talking, doughnut chomping chump. My pick is Dos Santos by KO in the third round.
