A Classic Worth Seeing Again – DOGMA

Dogma

Miramax Films

As I mentioned before in two previous posts (see links below) this is the third review from the movies I watched this weekend. I had some time on my hands, so I decided to see a DVD that a work associate let me barrow. It was a Kevin Smith classic “DOGMA”.

Just in case you have never seen “DOGMA” let me share the following synopsis with you. The eternal war between Good and Evil comes to New Jersey, go figure right; it is a Kevin Smith joint. Matt Damon and Ben Affleck play two fallen angels that attempt to derail the entire cosmological system, unless a shabby group of misfits can stop them from turning the whole apple cart over. It’s up to Bethany, played by Linda Fiorentino, to save the day and keep the fallen angels from entering into heaven through a loophole.

Okay, there is not a lot of new analysis I can add to this movie review. So all I can I really say is I think this is my favorite Kevin Smith movie out of all the things he has done. I like how the story moves along and the fact that I get a bit of education.

I am big George Carlin fan as well. He could be a big part about why I like this movie so much. In addition if you have every listened to our podcasts you probably know that I am a big fan of the movie ‘Vision Quest’. As a young middle school student I had a huge crush on Linda Fiorentino and I that memory is still with me. I think that memory helps provide the soft spot I have for this movie as well.

I watched this movie the same day I saw “The Monuments Men” so it was really weird for me to see Matt Damon without grey in his hair.  I must say his performance in Monuments was a lot more subdued than his hyper active Loki character.

In my mind there are two stand out performances in this movie that keeps me coming back, Salma Hayek and Alan Rickman. When we first meet Rickman’s character, Metatron, I laugh. I don’t know why but that fake mid-section just looks so fake, I can’t help myself. Although Smith had more of a budget for this movie you can still tell the Ken Doll look is not real. As for Hayek, her hot and saucy Serendipity character is intelligent and tough. She was a well proven actress by the time she appeared in DOGMA and that brought some real credit to this movie, at least in my opinion.

If you have not seen this movie, please do. The majority of the humor does not grow old although there are some jokes that are dated, and that is okay. If you have seen this movie before it’s time to see it again.

I give this movie, 4 train rides out of 5.

As I mentioned above this is one of three movies I saw over the weekend. Check out my review of ‘The LEGO Movie’ and ‘The Monuments Men ’.

Retro DVD Review

The Swingers Gang

The Swingers Gang

You may not know this, but Q and I have never seen Swingers and if you listened to the last episode you heard that one of Mike’s picks for who he would want to hang out with was Vince Vaughn‘s character “Trent” from Swingers.  So, we took the time to see this flick which also stars: Jon Favreau of “Iron Man (2008)” “Iron Man 2 (2010)” fame, Ron Livingston “Office Space (1999)” and the always lovely Heather Graham in a brief scene at the end of the film.

Undoubtedly this is a great Guy movie and is “so money, baby!” & is worth taking a look at. Listen in to hear what else we had to say.  If you feel the same or have a great line you want to share with us?  Drop us a line, baby, it’ll be money!

We hope you enjoy listening and we would love to hear back from you. Feel free to join the conversation on Facebook or twitter via @entfortherest. You can also find the crew on twitter: Q (@aka_q), Mike (@CB_Robinson) and SquareRoss (@SquareRoss).

EftRou 161: Fire Fighters, Vetrinarians, Mindy Kaling

So this week it was just back to Q and I.  We thought with all the big Network up fronts (basically FOX, NBC etc showing off to advertisers what is coming this fall) we should talk about our thoughts of some of the upcoming shows.  Also we kick things off with the Avengers bill for destroying/saving New York.  Sit back turn it up and enjoy the latest episode!

Avengers Assemble an expensive mess...

So I was reading this the other day and thought it to be rather humorous as well as an excellent topic to talk about with Q as well as get our fans thoughts.  Long story short, the Avengers battle comes to about $160 Billion dollars and is considered an act of God, or as I put it “Puny God”.

Boobtube Babble

Mindy Kaling Project

Mindy Kaling Project

Its that wonderful time of the year loved (or hated) by TV fans and advertisers – renewal time.  This year especially is proving to be a unique as many shows are either getting the axe after 8-9 years or have just run the course and its time to move on.  Right now is the time of the year in which most fans like Q and myself hope that some of our beloved shows get picked up (As of this writing FRINGE, Community, Parenthood and others that are our faves made the cut).  While advertisers get to start picking out which shows they are going to back financially for ad placement.  We chat a little about a few of our picks and touch back an episode not long ago where Q and I made some predictions about what we thought would last and what we thought would fail.  Listen in here and tell us your thoughts on what we got right but also tell us if you think we’re right again with our latest picks.

We hope you enjoy listening and we would love to hear back from you. Feel free to join the conversation on Facebook or twitter via @entfortherest. You can also find the crew on twitter: Q (@aka_q), Mike (@CB_Robinson), ShadyTheBiker (@shadythebiker), and me SquareRoss (@SquareRoss).

Until next time stay safe and enjoy your entertainment!
