EftRou 158

Q, Square and Mike return this week to bring you the latest in entertainment news as well as our thoughts on whatever comes to our minds.  This week we had some fun chatting about Chipotle, Sony and our favorite money themed movies. And just for the fun of it, we also introduce the world to Squario?

Chipotle vs. McDonald’s

Chipotle man!

Chipotle man!

The crew talks about a recent article that is coming out talking about how consumers are more inclined to go for a Chipotle Burrito aka “Burrito Pillow” (As noted by SquareRoss) than a McDonalds BBQ Wrap offerings.  The crew definitely can confirm that we have a clear winner in our opinion and speak from personal experience on the topic.  One of the big moves though by Chipotle was to get “Back to the Basics” as seen here in this commercial that has aired before movies and even during the Grammy’s earlier this year.  You can see the video here Chipotle “Back to the Basics”. If you are feeling nostalgic you can also listen to EftRoU’s 5th show, where Q and Na review Chipotle.

The Great SONY restructuring.

The Walkman

The Walkman

So Sony is in the midst of a huge change in the way they do things and run, starting with laying off over 10,000 employee in various areas of the company.  The crew talks innovation and whether Sony still can pull off a major comeback like Apple did in the 90′s into 2000.  The crew talks about all kinds of things relating to the company. Especially the emerging interactive controls coming out for TVs and if that is truly innovative or just a fad?

Speaking of Money…

Eddie Murphy In Trading Places

The crew decided to continue on with the subject of money and discusses some of the best money themed movies and what we like about them.  Mike, Q and Square definitely have some interesting picks including Oceans 11 (2001), Brewster’s Millions, Wall Street (1987) and some others that you might not expect or have thought of. If you can think of a movie or two that we forgot leave us a comment.

We hope you enjoy listening and we would love to hear back from you. Feel free to join the conversation on Facebook or twitter via @entfortherest you can also find the crew on twitter: Q (@aka_q), Mike (@CB_Robinson), and me SquareRoss (@SquareRoss).

EftRoU - Media Mogul

The new segment that I alluded to above is called EftRoU Media Mogul Fantasy League. We plan on having four seasons each year of the league and the point is to see who know more about media. Each of us will pick from movies, TV shows, video games and new DVDs. During this segment we kicked off with the first two rounds of the Media Mogul draft. In the first round Mike picked The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1, Shady’s pick was Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, Square Ross went with The Muppets, and I picked Battlefield 3. Listen in to see what else we pick in round two. We will also post all our other picks in a later plus the results spreadsheet for the world to see. Look for that to come later.

Feature Flick:

Ides of March movie

Cross Creek Pictures

The Ides of March stars George Clooney, not only does he star in this movie he also directors it and did some writing. The Ides of March is based on the play “Farragut North” by Beau Willimon. It’s about a dreamy campaign staffer for a new presidential candidate who receives a crash course about dirty politics. Other stars in The Ides of March include Ryan Gosling, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Paul Giamatti, Marisa Tomei, Jeffrey Wright and Evan Rachel Wood. Listen in and see what we think of this movie. Entertainment for the Rest of Us

It was a sad day for us here at Entertainment For the Rest of Us, Mike was home sick nursing a cold, but the troops carried on without him. On this episode of EftRoU the crew brings you another Cartoon Character Showdown between Leader 1 and Optimus Prime as well as a Feature Flick review of Dream House. We also give you an extra review of the movie 50/50.

Play

Cartoon Character Showdown:

For those of you who are new to Cartoon Character Showdown here is how it’s done: we choose two cartoon characters and debate which character is better. So Shady the Biker defended Optimus Prime and I defended Leader 1. As a reminder Optimus is the leader of the Transformers and Leader 1 is the leader of the GoBots. Who do you think won? Who should win? Listen in and see what happened. Better yet, tell us who you think should win by leaving a comment.

Feature Flick:

Dream House

Universal Pictures

This week we review the movie Dream House staring Daniel Craig, Naomi Watts, and Rachel Weisz. Dream House is about a family that moves into an idyllic home. They soon learn of brutal crimes committed against former residents.

Extra Review:

50/50

Mandate Pictures

I took some time to go see 50/50 this weekend as well. Since we had some extra time on the clock I shared my thoughts on this film. 50/50 is based on a real life story of Seth Rogen’s friend who beat cancer. It’s a comedy/drama centered around a 27-year-old guy who is diagnosed with cancer, and his fight to defeat the disease. It stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Adam, Seth Rogen as his best friend Kyle, Anna Kendrick as Adam’s therapist and Bryce Dallas Howard as Adam’s girlfriend. So sit back and enjoy this extra review.

EftRoU 130: I don’t get it…

EftRoU e130

Okay this is becoming a habit now. Once again I am late posting this week’s episode of Entertainment for the Rest of Us. Sorry folks, I’m just a regular guy and it seems that life is getting in the way of us getting our great thoughts out there about TV, Movies, and everything leisurely. Well I have complained enough, lets talk about the show.

This week we review and discuss the DVD Bridesmaids and in theaters, as of this posting, Moneyball. No points of interest to share but we still have a good time.

DV-Debief:

Bridesmaids

Universal Pictures

For those fans of SNL, Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph and Melissa McCarthy (recent Emmy winner from the CBS TV hit Mike and Molly), we got the DVD for you to go rent; we discuss Bridesmaids. Bridesmaids is a comedy about Annie, played Kristen Wiig, who is picked to be her best friend’s maid of honor, broke and not too happy about relationships she tries to fake her way through the pricy and odd rituals of getting married. Since we are a bunch of dudes we really didn’t get this movie. So please tell us what we are missing by leaving a comment.

Feature Flick:

Moneyball

Columbia Pictures

If you are looking for a good film to see with great dialog and storytelling then you need to go see Moneyball. The gents and I break this film down and discuss why it is so good. Moneyball is about Oakland A’s general manager Billy Beane’s attempt at building a baseball team on a budget by using science more than experience and gut feel. This movie stars the one and only Brad Pitt, Jonah Hill, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Chris Pratt and Robin Wright. Directed by Bennett Miller and based on the book “Moneyball: The Art of Winning an Unfair Game” written by Michael Lewis. Steven Zaillian and Aaron Sorkin wrote the screenplay for this wonderful film. I think it’s a must see. If you’ve seen Moneyball, and you don’t think it’s a must see tell me why by leaving a comment. Or if you like it tell us why…

Thanks again for stopping by and listening to the show. Be sure to tell your friends and family about us!

Apes Will Rise, Hold My Drink…

PlanetoftheApes
PlanetoftheApes

I wasn’t sure what to expect from this movie, and my expectations were not high, but I found that the movie delivered more than I anticipated.  I was never really into the Planet of the Apes remake movie, or the original, but this movie made me feel completely different because of the story, although it is ultimately the same thing.  This prequel makes me wish for yet another remake of the Planet of the Apes, just because I got so involved in the characters lives and would love to see a sequel with them involved.

The movie was as realistic as you can get when it comes to testing medicine on apes that causes them to be way more intelligent than anyone ever imagined.  Not sure if having professional intelligent scientists create a medicine that ultimately will kill humans without them realizing it is realistic, but then there wouldn’t have been much of a movie otherwise.  With a movie like this, you pretty much know what you’re getting yourself into before it even begins.  What I didn’t realize is how much I would enjoy Caesar, played by Andy Serkis, the main character chimpanzee, who forms a strong bond with the scientist Will Rodman played by James Franco.  I felt bad for the poor ape  when he is left at the ape facility and ends up with feelings of abandonment.  I wish the story had been done a little differently with the scientist having to give him up, because its not realistic that with him knowing how intelligent Caesar was that he would have let them keep him locked up like an animal.  He gave him up too willingly, and although he eventually realizes he made a huge mistake, not many people would have been able to do that.  Some people wouldn’t give up their dog that easily not to mention an ape that has been in your life since it was born and even knows sign language!  I think they could have done other things with that part of the story, because it was hard to accept.  Otherwise it was a realistic understanding of how it all began.  When you inevitably hear Caesar speak for the first time, I couldn’t help but feel like it was a bit off, even though it has to go into the movie.  It’s just hard to wrap your mind around an ape being able to talk.

RiseoftheApes

I also enjoyed the father with alzheimers played by John Lithgow. His role was an emotional one in a way, and many people can surely relate to a situation like that with a family member.  That whole situation certainly made the realism come to life because its what motivated Will so much to finding a cure.  David Hewlett played the arrogant neighbor, who in a way, is a big part of the movie. I like this actor and it was hard to watch him play this type of role.  Although his character is self centered, rude, and obnoxious, he brought much to the movie and it was played well.  I didn’t care too much for Freida Pinto’s character, Caroline, who played Will’s girlfriend.  Her role in the movie was too small and insignificant.  She added a small touch to the movie itself, but I was annoyed by how unnecessary it was.  And of course every movie needs a dumb naive kid who in this case, ends up being the caretaker for the apes at the facility.  You kind of wonder how he ended up with that job, but he certainly got what was coming to him.  The role was played by Tom Felton.  Another very important factor in the movie was the special effects, which I thought were done very well.  The apes were realistic and it definitely helped bring the movie to life.

The director, Rupert Wyatt, did a good job with this movie as far as keeping it along the story line of the original Planet of the Apes movie, and you really get a feel for that at the end, right after the credits begin.  Overall the movie was presented well with a decent story and good entertainment.  Still thinking about the movie a day later, wishing for more.  I give Rise of the Planet of the Apes 3.5 beat downs by one smart ape.
